On the edge of Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, Croft Cottage is a detached former steading conversion, within a U shaped courtyard, situated on an upland farm.

It is a simply wonderful location for a peaceful family holiday, offering seclusion, but not total isolation, with the picturesque town of Gatehouse of Fleet to the west, just 20 minutes away by car and providing hotels, restaurants, shops, a delightful and testing nine hole golf course, tennis courts, river and loch fishing. There are numerous other nearby attractions and activities for both adults and children, including Cream o' Galloway, Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory and Galloway Activity Centre. To the east is the popular market town of Castle Douglas, with its vibrant high street of unique independent shops, cafes and restaurants, theatre and cinema, swimming pool and golf course. NTS Threave Estate is located on the edge of the town with Threave House & Gardens and Threave Castle all worth a visit.

Sandy beaches and rocky coves for bathing, windsurfing and sailing are within easy driving distance; sea fishing and horse riding are also available; the Forestry Commission 7Stanes mountain biking trail at Kirroughtree is around 40 minutes' drive away; and the area is a haven for wildlife, with regular sightings of deer, red squirrels, red kites, grouse, barn owls and curlews. From the cottage door there are extensive walks and mountain bike rides over hill, past lochs, through forestry and down the valley. Slightly further afield but well worth a visit are Kirkcudbright know as the Artist's Town due to its links with the Glasgow Boys and the small town of Wigtown, Scotland's Book Town.

The Cottage is also perfect for bracing winter holidays where its warmth and comfort provide a cosy retreat.

If anything the property was 'undersold' as on arrival the presentation far exceeded our expectations. A lovely cottage way out in the 'wilds' of Galloway above Gatehouse of Fleet protected by a long private road/track from the nearest public tar road. We have taken the liberty of discussing this with the owner as we considered that whilst some guests may find the remoteness somewhat daunting others, ourselves included, will find this feature a great attraction. Overall the cottage was one of the nicest and most comfortable properties we have ever taken in almost 20 years of self catering two or three properties per year. Modern in approach and furnishings with a beautifully equipped kitchen. Comfy bed with modern electric Velux roof lights in the roof. It was always very cosy and warm and despite the November weather we never needed to light the log fire. We have also mentioned the understated central location of the area for wildlife viewing with main emphasis on birds of the nearby moorlands and Solway coast. Finally special mention should be made of the kindness and friendliness of the owner Mrs Hunter who we came to call 'Sarah' very quickly. A great young lady indeed. We WILL be back.
