Snaptrip says

Amber Cottage in Matlock is praised for its cleanliness, comprehensive facilities, and thoughtful touches like a welcome basket. Guests appreciate the quiet location with lovely views, though some find the access challenging due to steep hills and stairs. The property is well-equipped, but there are mentions of cold bedrooms and maintenance issues like a shower screen needing attention. Overall, it's considered a comfortable and pleasant stay, ideal for those looking to enjoy the Peak District.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Guests consistently describe the cottage as super clean, with no negative comments on cleanliness, indicating high standards are maintained.

The location is appreciated for its quietness and views, but the steep access and parking challenges are noted, making it less suitable for those with mobility issues.

The cottage is generally found to be comfortable and a 'home from home', though some guests mention the downstairs can be cold, affecting the comfort level.

Facilities are well-regarded, with quality kitchen equipment and a washing machine, but the absence of a tumble dryer and issues with the shower screen suggest room for improvement.

While guests are delighted by the welcome basket and considerate touches, there is insufficient information to guarantee such amenities for future guests, and thus a score cannot be provided.

About this property

Amber Cottage is a delightful reverse-level holiday home resting in the picturesque town of Matlock. Sitting peacefully on the outskirts of the stunning Peak District National Park, this charming cottage is perfectly suited to a family or a group of four friends, seeking an exciting expedition in the Derbyshire countryside. Step inside the welcoming embrace of Amber Cottage and be greeted by two well decorated bedrooms, one boasting custom-made oak adult bunk beds, and a spacious master bedroom with a pine king-size bed and lovely dressing table, where you can take your time to get ready for the evening's festivities after a long soak in the bath or refreshing shower. The master bedroom features a large double patio door leading out onto a private patio with steep steps leading up to a further garden space, where you can enjoy a breath of fresh morning air as you sip a warm coffee and appreciate a relaxing break with the family. Climb the staircase to the first floor and prepare a hearty breakfast in the well-thought-out kitchen with the help of all the useful appliances, before heading into the warmth of the living/dining room to feast upon the food. Venture out onto the upper patio and enjoy a glass or two at the end of the day and chat with your group about your favourite moments of the holiday so far. Whilst in the area wine and dine at some of the finest restaurants in the local area or grab some fresh ingredients from the local supermarket or take advantage of the local chip shop or takeaways. The property is within easy reach of the gorgeous country houses of Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, whilst the nearby pretty market town of Bakewell lies within the heart of the Peak District National Park and offers a great place for meandering; don't forget to stop for a Bakewell pudding. For walkers and cyclists there are several trails close by including the Monsal trail and High Peak trail offering outstanding views through the countryside. For an unforgettable holiday with those closest to you, stay at Amber Cottage.

Since the late 17th-century construction of the resort, Matlock, and Matlock Bath, two prominent Peak District towns, have drawn tourists to the region. The Matlocks, which are located in the lovely, wooded gorge of the River Derwent, provide a variety of stores, bars, and eateries in addition to a number of attractions like Gulliver's Kingdom and the Peak District Mining Museum. From the cable car that transports guests to the Heights of Abraham, a fantastic location for the whole family with its show caves, nature walk, water gardens, and Owl Maze, tourists may take in magnificent views of the gorge. The High Peak Cycle Trail begins south of the town, while the National Tramway Museum at Crich is only a short drive away. The market town of Bakewell and Chatsworth House and Park lie to the north and shouldn't be missed!

A few points though which may help others when considering the cottage. The downstairs (I.e. where the bedrooms are) of the cottage is extremely cold. There is a plug in radiator in the double bedroom but (perhaps due to the large patio doors in the room) we found it had little impact. We left the curtains drawn across the doors permanently. The allocated parking space is between two others whose cars never seem to move at all, and is fairly narrow. I have mobility issues due to arthritis and ideally need to open my car door fully in order to exit the vehicle without causing pain or falls. This has been impossible whilst parking at the cottage. There is then a flight of stairs from street level to cottage level - beware of packing too much! The photos on the website show what appears to be a door amidst front gardens. However, on arrival you will find instructions that none of the garden space to the front of the cottage actually belongs to it and therefore to avoid using it so as not to upset the neighbours. The lady who lives next door seems permanently upset anyway.....! The washing machine was a boon, however when staying for a fortnight and having a partner and daughterbwhonenjoy walking and outdoor sports, a tumble dryer would be a blessing too. We stayed for a fortnight and there was no option of fresh bedding after a week. Most cottages we stay in leave a change of bedding when guests are staying a fortnight. The shower screen needs attention as it doesn't seal and after the first shower we very quickly learnt that we needed to ensure a large towel was placed on the floor at the side of the bath to absorb the ensuing flood! The welcome basket and pint of milk in the fridge were lovely touches. However the shine was sort of knocked off a little with the comprehensive instructions about how to sort and bag up all the laundry in the different and labelled bags. We noticed this during Covid and absolutely understood the need for it at that point in time. However, we don't really feel it necessary any longer. A holiday is supposed to be a break from the daily grind - a daily grind which formme includes steipping our beds and sorting laundry! I wouldn't really expect to pay a decent sum of money to go on holiday and be expected to clean and sort the property for the next guests on leaving. Overall, a pleasant property in a beautiful spot but we felt probably more suited to short breaks and certainly not suitable for anyone with any mobility issues.

The cottage was really clean and had everything that you needed and more to enjoy your stay. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and my wife enjoyed the wine.
