Some guests suggest improvements in comfort regarding the living room furniture and minor maintenance issues, but overall experiences are positive with many looking to return.

Guests that stayed at this property said

Guests are generally pleased with the cleanliness, with only a minor mention of dust under a bed. The high standard of cleanliness contributes to the overall positive experience.

The cottage's location is frequently commended for being close to local shops, amenities, and attractions. However, some guests noted difficulty in finding the property and suggested better signage.

While the cottage is described as cosy and warm, some guests found the living room furniture uncomfortable. The firmness of the bed was also noted, although a topper was provided upon request.

About this property

Puddleduck Cottage is an endearing stone-fronted, detached dwelling, set in the chocolate-box village of Thornton-le-Dale, one mile from the popular market town of Pickering. Originally a barn, the property has been lovingly restored to a high standard and now provides a delightful single-storey holiday home for the most discerning guests, looking to tour North Yorkshre. With bags of character, there are flagged floors throughout and the open-plan living area has high pitched ceilings with the original exposed timbers, a well-equipped galley-style kitchen, and a homely sitting area. The double bedroom leads off the living room, whilst two small steps lead up to the sleek bathroom and the second family bedroom. Comfortably furnished to a high standard, the cottage has a lovely, homely feel and will be a pleasure to come back to after a day of exploring. Outside, there is a private sunny garden to the rear of the property, where one can sit and relax with a glass of wine and watch the sun go down. A short stroll along the side of the beck brings you into the centre of this most picturesque village, with an array of interesting shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. There are numerous walks straight from the door, while nearby bustling Pickering hosts the terminus of the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which winds its way through heather clad moors to Grosmont and Whitby. Local attractions include Dalby Forest, with its biking and walking tracks, Duncombe Park, Castle Howard and the pretty market town of Helmsley. With the seaside towns of Whitby and Scarborough just a short drive and the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors National Park to discover, Puddleduck Cottage provides an excellent base any time of the year.

Just two miles east of Pickering, in the Dalby Forest and North York Moors National Park, is the picturesque village of Thornton-le-Dale. This exquisite spot at the top of a lovely valley is a haven for walkers, bikers, and nature enthusiasts. Despite being 13 and 20 miles apart, Scarborough and Whitby provide all the services and amenities of two of the best coastal resorts in the nation. Around a one-hour drive from each other, York and Castle Howard provide all the history and culture a vacation might want.

The directions to get to the property were accurate and clear. The standard of equipment and cleanliness was excellent. Hot water and heating was set up for the guests convenience. It was a quiet location and parking space was close by and spacious. The WiFi was fast and reliable. Just two minor comments – nothing that would stop us re-booking and that need not be included in what you publish about the cottage. We found the large knives a little on the blunt side for cutting anything substantial. We used the washing machine just once and found the cycle very slow.
